Green Thumb Farm Notes

Notes From Green Thumb Farm

Mid-August is here and the heat has arrived. After cooler and wetter than normal June and July, we now seem to be ina a hot dry spell.

Summer squash are finally arriving in quantity - our 4th planting - cucumber and pickles - 3rd planting are also doing well. It will be a short season for both of these as September is around the corner and both these crops will begin to go down-hill with the cooler weather.

August is here and the cool damp weather has continued for another month. Our cucumbers and summer squashes have had their yield decreased by over half due to the weather. We’re still waiting to see what the outcome will be on our tomatoes but if this continues it will not be good. We spray no fungicide or other pesticides on these crops so we are very weather dependent.

Our year is coming to a close, and as every year we have had our ups and downs while growing all these delicious organic vegetables.  As seems to be true every year, some crops will do better than others .  Our fall greens have been wonderful; the kales and oriental greens have flourished; our turnips and other root crops are still doing well, too.  Our summer beans, squashes and eggplants all did well.  This year our biggest disappointment had to be our tomato crop.  We lost way too many to diseases brought on by the long periods of wet, damp weather, that happened through

Summer is here and crops are growing well, with plenty of rain and enough heat and sun.

Our strawberry crop is done for the year.  Because of so many night time thundershowers, the quality of the

farmer-bill.jpgOur growing year this past season was a mixed bag - some crops did very well and some not as much. However, in general we felt we had a good season with plenty of variety over the weeks. We brought in many staples which people seemed to enjoy, especially tomatoes, beans and squashes.

farmer-bill.jpgFall now seems to be here - our eggplants and peppers are done for the year. Sweet potatoes and winter squash are still in storage and many types of root crops all will be brought in for the next several weeks. Look for cabbages, oriental and other greens and some herbs as we finish out the year.

farmer-bill.jpgOctober is here and finally the summer heat seems over - those 80 degree plus days early in the month really pushed our vegetables. Our broccoli and lettuce plantings scheduled for November harvests are ready now, four weeks early!

However, we have plenty of fall greens planted - many oriental greens of different types, as well as arugula, broccoli raabs, and swiss chards.

farmer-bill.jpgFall is upon us; the weather will be changing soon as the days will get shorter. We still have a field of tomatoes getting ready to ripen, and with enough warm days we'll have tomatoes until Halloween.

farmer billSummer is coming to a close and fall is on the way.  Our pumpkin picking farm tour is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, rain or shine.  It's a riding tour on a trailer pulled by a tractor through some of our fields and farm yard, where we'll be viewing some animals and farm equipment, seeing some fall crops and finishing with everyone picking a pumpkin.  There is no charge for the tour, but reservatio

Farmer BillSummer is coming to a close and our summer bounty will soon be giving way to our fall crops. We still have plenty of tomatoes, eggplant, scallions, and carrots. More squash and bean plantings are still coming on. We hope to have winter squash happening as well. Our fall greens will be starting soon - tat soi and pak chois of several types, as well as a new red mizuna by the end of September.
